The Minivet Birding App

Minivet is a campus birding app aimed at helping people explore the joys of bird watching. It serves as an easy to follow bird book and provides a non-technical description of birds found on Indian institute campuses. Data from different institutes is being added in phases. This version is merely a sneak-peak of what is to come. The app is only available on Android devices.

Minivet is produced and maintained by members of the Behavioural Ecology Lab, headed by Dr. Manjari Jain. The data presented here is the collective effort of the birding communities of the featured institutes. We hope that the community will enjoy using the app and contribute to it. We also hope that it will help induct many more to the ever growing community of birders.

We welcome new members to the Minivet team. If you are interested to contribute, please get in touch with Manjari via gmail at drmanjarijain.

This app is dedicated to the grand old man of Indian ornithology, Salim Ali.

How to use the app

The app lists birds that have been recorded on the respective campuses. The birds are listed family-wise and arranged alphabetically. The size of the bird with reference to four common birds (House Sparrow, Indian Common Myna, House Crow and Black Kite) is provided. A brief non-technical description and images have also been provided for several birds.

Privacy Policy

The Minivet app enables citizen science and to that end requires a login from the device where the app is installed. A Minivet user account is created using an email ID belonging to the user. The account is used to store user-specific bird sighting data on Minivet servers and allows users to access their data across devices. If the user chooses to enable location service, location data from each sighting is also recorded and saved on Minivet servers. This data is then available to the user through the app, allowing them to curate their campus birding data. Bird sighting data may be used for analysis of bird species distribution by BEL. User IDs will not be used in such analysis. BEL reserves the right to use anonymized bird sighting data recorded with Minivet with collaborating labs. User email-id is not shared with any third-party. The app does not store any other personal information of its users.

User Data Deletion

Minivet does not yet support automated deletion of user accounts. In case a user requires deletion of their account please email minivet-support from the email used to sign-in to Minivet. We will delete your account, deactivate your sign-in tokens and remove any association with your email ID from the bird sightings data that has been uploaded. We will however retain the scrubbed sighting data. Since deletion is currently a manual action expect a turnaround time of 7 days for a confirmation.
